Eight schools in South Carolina were recently nominated for an award called Palmetto’s Finest. I wanted to see what one of these schools looks like and what it says about the recognition.
Fortunately, one of these schools is here in Spartanburg, where I live. I visited Jesse Boyd Elementary on a recent Monday afternoon. Here’s what I saw:
About an hour after school was dismissed, a group of students, parents, and teachers were walking and jogging the thin asphalt track around the playground behind the school. They were getting ready for the “Couch to 5-K” run – an event that fifth graders are organizing as part of their experience in Jesse Boyd’s International Baccalaureate, or IB, program.
